Adaptive clothing sizing guide

Finding the perfect fit for your adaptive clothing should be effortless. At Vilbers.com, we understand the unique needs of our customers, especially those seeking comfortable and functional wheelchair adaptive trousers and other adaptive clothing. This guide will help you confidently select the right size, whether you're a paraplegic or quadriplegic individual, or simply looking for inclusive fashion.

How to choose your pants by body measurements

We've designed our sizing charts around body measurements to ensure the best possible fit for our adaptive trousers. To find your ideal size, you'll need to measure your:

  1. Waist: Measure around your natural waistline, typically the narrowest part of your torso.
  2. Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips, keeping the measuring tape parallel to the floor.
  3. Thighs: Measure around the fullest part of one thigh.

Important note on waist adjustment: Our adaptive trousers feature an adjustable waist. This means that if the size fits your hips and thighs comfortably, the waist measurement can fluctuate by approximately 20% and still provide a great fit.

Measuring from a seated or lying position

We know that standing to take measurements isn't always possible. You can comfortably and accurately measure yourself while lying down or sitting in your wheelchair. Just follow these simple steps:

  • For Waist: If you're seated, lean slightly to the side to expose your natural waistline. If lying down, simply locate your natural waist. Measure around this area.
  • For Hips: While seated or lying down, ensure the tape measure goes around the fullest part of your hips and bottom. Try to keep the tape measure as level as possible.
  • For Thighs: While seated or lying down, measure around the fullest part of one thigh. Make sure the leg is relaxed.

Don't have a measuring tape? No problem!

You can still accurately measure yourself using a simple household item:

  1. Grab a ribbon, rope, or even a piece of string.
  2. Wrap it comfortably around the area you need to measure (waist, hips, or thigh) while seated or lying down.
  3. Mark the point where the ribbon overlaps.
  4. Lay the ribbon flat and measure its length with a standard ruler.

Measure your favorite garment for a perfect match

For an even more precise fit, you can compare the measurements of your favorite well-fitting pants or shirt to the measurements of our garments. We provide detailed garment measurements for all our items. Simply:

  1. Lay your favorite item flat on a bed or flat surface.
  2. Measure the relevant dimensions (e.g., inseam, waist width, hip width for pants; chest width, sleeve length for shirts).
  3. Compare these measurements to the "Garment Measurements" provided on our product pages.

Technical Specifications

This 3-ply performance garment is built using premium, certified materials to withstand the rigors of winter:

Outer Shell (Oxford PU 200gsm):

Durability: Made from 100% Polyester with a PU/WD finish, this fabric is significantly more abrasion-resistant than standard jacket materials. It is built to resist tearing, rubbing, and creases.

Water Repellency: Provides excellent protection against snow and light rain.  (Note: Not intended for high-pressure water or submersion).

Safety: OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified.

Insulation (3M™ Thinsulate™ Type J250):

Extreme Warmth: Featuring the densest J250 grade, providing a high R-value of 3.9.

Static Warmth: Specifically designed for users with reduced lower-body movement, trapping body heat effectively even in temperatures down to -10°C.

Ethical Standards: bluesign® approved and hypoallergenic.

Inner Lining:

Comfort: Lined with 100% Polyester Polar Fleece for a soft, warm feel. The lining is fast-drying.

Understanding Thermal Resistance (R-value).

The R-value of 3.9 is a measurement of the material's ability to resist heat flow. Higher is Warmer: The higher the R-value, the better the material is at trapping your body heat inside the cover.

Insulation Efficiency: A rating of 3.9 indicates very high thermal resistance for synthetic insulation, designed to keep the wearer warm even when they are not generating much body heat through movement.

Comfortable Temperature Range: While specific comfort temperatures depend on personal circulation and what layers are worn underneath, the Vilber’s ThermoShell Mermaid is engineered for true winter conditions.

Freezing Conditions: With 250g Thinsulate, this product is designed for temperatures well below 0°C and is specifically intended for use in snow and ice.

Deep Cold: Based on the high R-value of 3.9 and the added wind protection of the Oxford outer shell, this cover is suitable for "deep winter" (typically -10°C to -20°C), provided the user is wearing appropriate base layers. For warmth in extra cold conditions we suggest our Combi sacks with doubled 3M Thinsulate 250J insulation and additional layer of neoprene under feet and bottom. The product can be found here: Wheelchair warm Combi

Static Warmth: Because wheelchair users often have reduced leg movement to generate heat, this high-density insulation is vital for maintaining a safe body temperature during extended periods outdoors in the cold. All our ThermoShells and Combi sacks can be paired with warm electrical blanket from Belieff. The product can be found here: Heat pad including power bank https://vilbers.com/products/heat-pad-including-power-bank

Key Performance Factors

Water Resistance: The individual fibers of inner insulation absorb less than 1% of their weight in water, meaning the insulation maintains its "loft" and warmth even in damp, snowy conditions.

Wind Protection: The 200gsm Oxford fabric acts as a barrier against wind chill, which is often the primary cause of heat loss when moving in a wheelchair.
